Training for Agencies & Professionals

Developing a Trauma-Informed Approach to Victim Services & Support

Healing Justice offers specialized, customizable training for criminal legal professionals and social service providers at the national and local levels. Our trainings focus on the development of policies and practices for supporting and protecting crime victims and survivors post-conviction. We can help you expand and improve the experiences of crime victims and survivors in cases involving claims of innocence and exonerations, through tailored training, tools, and resources.

What to Expect

Professionals who participate in Healing Justice training learn how to integrate trauma-informed victim notification and support into their post-conviction case activities. This training presents timely data, trends, and resources to develop seamless practices that will make notification easier and more successful while also ensuring that victims’ and survivors’ needs are met.

Participants hear directly from victims and survivors with experience in these cases, and Healing Justice staff offer expert recommendations along with specialized tools developed in collaboration with the US Department of Justice’s Office for Victims of Crime. Attendees can workshop questions with presenters about specific cases and/or protocols and practices.

Trainings are offered to prosecutors, police officers, judges, attorneys, and victim advocates in both government agencies and nonprofit organizations. Trainings can be provided for the staff of a single unit or agency, for a regional consortium of agencies, or for associations at national conferences or other venues.

While trainings are primarily geared toward cases involving post-conviction claims of innocence and exonerations, and the agencies handling such cases, recommendations are relevant to all post-conviction case activity.

Offerings

Healing Justice offers two different forms of training to accommodate the needs of client agencies. We can also customize longer trainings, as needed:

90-Minute Trainings

These concise sessions are ideal for quick yet comprehensive education on trauma-informed practices and can be incorporated into longer-term Technical Assistance consulting engagements.

Two-Part Trainings

These in-depth sessions are typically scheduled around a lunch break or on successive days, allowing for a deeper exploration and practical application of the training material.

Trainings generally begin with an intake call, followed by a more-in-depth conversation with the client to understand the specific agency needs and community context. The training is then tailored to the specific audience, facilitated on-site (or virtually), and the engagement concludes with a post-training call to glean feedback from the client.
