Attorney - Part-time/Contract Position

POSITION LOCATION:

This is a fully remote position.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

This position is part of a grant-funded project to create a safe, centralized and mobile-friendly “Post-Conviction Online Resource Center” (PCRC), where crime victims and survivors can find critical information about the post-conviction process, get questions answered and concerns addressed, and connect directly with a trained victim services specialist for individualized information and support. The information provided on the PCRC, and through direct support, will better help victims advocate for themselves throughout their engagement with the criminal legal system.

In order to help victims and survivors, as well as service providers, better understand and navigate the post-conviction process in individual cases, we will contract with an attorney to create a first-of-its-kind legal analysis of post-conviction procedures in each state. From this analysis, we will develop detailed, user-friendly state-by-state resources, including outlines, flowcharts, descriptions of agency roles and responsibilities, and application of victims’s rights. Together, these resources and tools will both educate and support victims and survivors as well as enable prosecutors, court staff, and victim advocates to fulfill their legal duties to victims and survivors and deliver timely and meaningful victim services.

This is a short-term contract, ideally beginning April 1 with the project completed no later than September 30, 2024.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • J.D.

  • A minimum of five years of legal experience.

  • An understanding of post-conviction process and victims’ rights.

  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to handle multiple tasks.

  • The ability to work collaboratively.

  • Outstanding research and analytical skills.

  • Great writing and communication skills.

  • Initiative to identify needs, take charge of tasks, and get things done.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and sound judgment, including working effectively with various agency staff.

HOW TO APPLY:

Please send a cover letter, resume, and two professional references to info@healingjusticeproject.org.

CONTRACT RATE:

In your application, please include an estimation of the hours you anticipate you will need to complete this project. Please note that the maximum hourly rate must meet Federal guidelines of no more than $81.25 per hour (capped at $650 for an eight-hour day).

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

Healing Justice was awarded funding by the Office for Victims of Crime (OVC) for a three-year project that will create resources to improve the delivery of support and services to crime victims post-conviction. Healing Justice, with assistance from the National Center for Victims of Crime (NCVC) and other national partners, will address the gap in post-conviction victim support with the creation of a safe, centralized, and mobile-friendly “Post-Conviction Online Resource Center” (PCRC). The PCRC will be a unique web-based resource center where victims can find critical information about the post-conviction process, get their questions answered and concerns addressed, and, if desired, connect directly with a trained victim services specialist for individualized support. The PCRC will host a variety of trauma-informed and victim-centered resources, including written content, videos, photographs, PDFs, pre-recorded webinars, and links to external resources, including NCVC’s VictimConnect hotline.

The selected web designer and developer will be responsible for the creation of the PCRC, which must be visually interesting, easy to navigate, accessible on computers, phones, and tablets, and 508-compliant. It must also capture analytics on web views, explorations, and downloads, and be easy to update by Healing Justice staff. Concepts for the site will be discussed and the designer will be expected to consult and craft a design that meets federal and project privacy protocols.

The designer will also be required to provide testing and ongoing support for a time period to be determined and to respond to any technical issues that may arise and assist staff as needed. Any products developed under this project and relating to this website will become the property of Healing Justice. Any related features, tools, software, etc., that require ongoing subscription or membership payments for Healing Justice to maintain will require prior approval. Final payment for the site's development will be after user testing and OVC approval.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

To be considered for this project, the designer/developer must be experienced with every aspect of web design and development. The designer/developer needs to understand the purpose and goals of the project, as well as the project’s target audience. The designer/developer must also have the knowledge and capacity to train Healing Justice staff to maintain the site once it is completed. In addition, ideal candidates will possess the following:

  • Comfort working remotely, though an office in the NC Triangle region a plus, with the ability to provide direct, one-on-one support and training to Healing Justice staff.

  • Experience serving small non-profit organizations.
